CAMERA WORK
Working alongside the other 2nd-year music students at Massey last year, we put on a broadcasted gig with a variety of performers, visual effects, and lighting. We were meant to do a festival but due to Covid-19, we had to make some drastic changes to keep everyone involved as safe as possible. This meant limiting the number of people we could have in one space at a time. Broadcasting the show allowed us a lot more freedom with stage, lighting, and visual design without having to worry about a physical audience.

To make the show a bit more fast-paced we had two stages set up in different rooms. Due to this, each room had to have its own crew. For this gig, I was made a camera operator. I alongside about 4 others were allocated a camera and a room. The goal was to get some indication from the performers as to what they wanted to be caught on camera to then take initiative to achieve those shots. As well as this, we were connected to a camera director through coms who would tell us to move to certain shots on the fly.

It was an amazing experience that allowed me to get a feel for a completely different department in the industry than what I’m used to. Camera operation is defiantly a field I look forward to learning more about.
